The Nerd
By Larry Shue
A
Strait-laced Architect Finds His Life Turned Upside Down by the Unexpected
Appearance of an Old Acquaintance
An aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in the war. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. As Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leads to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence.
About the Author
Larry Shue, a promising actor and playwright, had his career cut short at the age of 39 by the crash of a commuter plane on September 23, 1985.
Much of Larry Shue's gentle, thoughtful humor derives from mistaken identity and role-playing, especially when the role-playing gets out of hand.
Shue's characters and situations in The Nerd are deceptively simple and commonplace: Willum, a likable architect; his sometime girlfriend; a wisecracking best friend; a client with a short fuse and his family; and the title character, the house guest from hell. A simple dinner party, some party games that go a little bit awry - and by the end of Act 1 we are in a zone of hilarious insanity.
