Cast & Crew

A Delightful Musical/Comedy/Drama of Noah and His Family and Their Trials and Tribulations Before, During and After the Flood.

Written in 1970, it originally starred Danny Kaye as Noah, and Madeline Kahn as Goldie, Noah’s son Ham’s love interest.  It is the comic retelling of the biblical story with a message for today’s audiences, to treat each other with respect and love your family even though there are times of discord.

Noah starts off as a doddering 600 year old man, and is changed into a ninety year old man.  Noah questions the Lord in “Why Me”, then he kicks up his heels at his joyous transformation in “Ninety Again”.  He sings to his wife Esther that she is the only one he has loved in “You”, and after he has disobeyed the Lord, he sings to her his most poignant song, “Hey Girlie”.

Noah’s wife, Esther, gives advice to her children and their wives when she sings her “An Old Man” song.

Noah and Esther’s oldest son Shem is the tightwad of the family and is married to Leah who screams on a regular basis, in part, because she can’t seem to get anyone to remember her name.

The middle son Ham is a loafer and a womanizer who ends up ditching one wife for another.  Ham doubts his father’s sanity.  His love interest Goldie, is a sexy, golden girl (dancing girl) who works at the Golden Ram.

The youngest son Japeth, is the philosophical one who worries about the people left behind.  He sings the wonderfully touching, “Something, Somewhere” about his search for the meaning of life, “Poppa Knows Best” with Noah and his two brothers while they have a comic argument about a rudder for the boat and “I Do Not Know A Day I Did Not Love You”, where at last, he admits his love for his brother Ham’s first wife Rachel.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS:                       “A musical to be loved, to be cherished… it moved me profoundly… beguiling melodies… absorbing libretto… who wants a conventional song-and-dance show with such as this around?”

ASSOCIATED PRESS:                  “One of Rodgers’ finest musicals… a show for anyone… rich in comedy, full of melody and that rare ingredient that touches your heart.”
